Globally, there are 500 million active users on Facebook, a number that is expected to double by the end of next year. A bit more than one-fifth of all Facebook users – 150 million – reside in the U.S. where nearly 50% of all Americans have a Facebook account. The typical Facebook user has 130 friends with whom he communicates regularly and maintains an active connection to 80 community web pages or forums. On any given day, 50% of Facebook users log onto Facebook where they share an average 30 billion pieces of information.

The statistics are staggering! If Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest nation in the world, according to a February 21, 2011 report by Time magazine. Like the invention of the printing press, Facebook and its social media siblings Twitter and YouTube are changing the way people communicate and the way products are marketed.
